Case Study: United Biscuits Rugby World Cup 2007 Campaign

A campaign based on the Rugby world cup 2007 and covering the UK and Ireland was promoted via 50 million packs of peanuts, biscuits and crisps across multiple United Biscuits brands. The promotion ran for the duration of the tournament and offered prizes ranging in value from £5.00 to £100,000 (E20,000 in Eire).

The competition entrant sent an SMS with the keyword 'MAN' plus a unique on-pack code to the advertised short code number. The entrant was then sent a reverse billed message of 25 pence (billed to their mobile phone) nominating a team, a player number and a cash prize value. The entrant would win the cash prize if the player nominated for them was named as man of the match in any of the games during the tournament.

X-on provided the SMS platform for the Ireland and UK short codes and with large volumes of SMS being processed a high level of support was provided.

Consumers needed to call a promotional premium rate phone number and insert a unique reference code which was printed on breakfast cereal packs. The were informed immediately if they were a winner.

In order to win a family holiday in Florida, consumers called an on-pack 0871 number and entered their on-pack URN.
